881 (2000-01)

Bawku District is one of the most isolated, arid, and poorest regions in Ghana. The Peace Corps has made it a priority to focus its efforts in disadvantaged areas such as Bawku to more directly address the challenges of poverty, and has assigned 32-year-old Susan Rosely to work as a community development volunteer with the Community Welfare Foundation (COMWELF),
a local private development agency. Since arriving in late 1999, Susan has assisted COMWELF
to design and implement programs. From the beginning, Susan saw that a few of the most successful small business people owned heavy one-speed bicycles that they used for productive purposes, such as the carrying of goods for sale. Thus, Susan and COMWELF understood that bicycles were an economically and culturally appropriate means of transport locally.

Baisikeli Kenya
Following the abolition of import duties on bicycles in July 2001, Kenya has seen strong growth in imports of new, single-speed bicycles for Productive use by both urban and rural populations. However, the $55 price of Imported models is still, on the whole, outside the financial reach of the vast majority of low-income Kenyans. With this in mind, an experienced group of development professionals established Baisikeli Kenya in May 2003 to make transport more affordable, while doing so on a financially-sustainable, large-scale basis. In mid-June, Pedals for Progress shipped an initial container of 400+ bicycles, plus spare parts and accessories. Baisikeli Kenya will recondition and sell all bicycles received, beginning on a Pilot basis in urban neighborhoods of the capital city of Nairobi, targeting low-income teachers, office and health workers, students, and laborers.
