ECODAC,
Ewarton Jamaica
The Ewarton
Community Action Committee (ECODAC) has been identified as a qualified
non-profit agency that meets all of the criteria of a successful
international partner for Pedals for Progress and we are seeking
funds to facilitate the collection and shipment of the first container
of bicycles as seed capital to ECODAC.
The bicycles
will be used in two ways, the first as a bicycle mechanic training
program and the second will be a bicycle business that will be run
by the students as business training. The sale of the bicycles will
allow the youth to operate a business first hand as well as raise
money for the operations of the center. This will benefit the entire
community of Ewarton as it is a rural community where there is no
public transportation system and the taxi fares are increasing every
year. It is becoming more difficult for the people of Ewarton to
travel to school, work and to bring their products to the local
market.
We have a partner
all ready to go with ECODAC, contracts have been signed the only
thing we need now is to raise money to send the first contianer.

21, Stefan Voda, Moldova
Following the disintegration of the USSR and the collapse of the
Eastern Bloc economy, communities like Stefan Voda, in the former
soviet republic of Moldova have seen incomes shrink, the cost of
imported goods such as petroleum skyrocket, and their modest standards
of living plummet. Personal mobility and productivity have suffered.
As bus fares rose, the inhabitants of Stefan Voda could not afford
to take public transport, the system collapsed, and a town once
inter-connected via a bus system was left without transportation.
Private cars are few. Moldovans are fond of bicycles, yet quality
and price is a challenge for those on limited incomes. Nobody will
sell a used bike, and new expensive imported bikes are the only
ones available.Local farmers on average walk 10-12 miles daily,
to and from their fields.
Since 2002 P4P has shipped 1,336 bicycles to Rural 21. They are
ready for container #4 but they need a little capital boost which
happens from time to time. Click
here for more information.
